The DigiEduHack Dortmund invites participants to work together to develop solutions to stimulate the learning processes of lower secondary school students (grades 5 to 9 or 10, depending on the type of school) in our city using digital technologies.
The DigiEduHack Dortmund is primarily aimed at teachers and pedagogical staff of secondary schools in Dortmund as well as pedagogical staff of extracurricular educational institutions.

Here you can find our schedule for DigiEduHack Dortmund 2021. Our local Hackathon event consists of three major components: a virtual kick-off event, a virtual teamwork phase and a closing event. The core of the teamwork phase is 10 November 2021, but the schedule is designed in such a way that it is possible for pedagogically active people to participate despite their professional commitments.

Together we will start DigiEduHack Dortmund 2021 in a video conference. At the kick-off event, we will give you impulses on the topic and the challenges that go hand in hand with it. Based on this, the teams for the work phase will be formed. All team members can get to know each other and decide together which challenge they will work on. The kick-off event will last until 7 pm. Let's do it: Core of the working phase

Directly after the kick-off event on 5 November, the teams can start their respective work phase. The core of the work phase is 10 November. It ends with the deadline for submitting the results on 12 November at 12 noon. However, we are deliberately not limiting the work phase of DigiEduHack Dortmund 2021 to the 24 hours on 10 November, but are allowing a freely designed work phase between 5 November and 12 November. Because we know that it is easier for teachers and other pedagogically active people to participate at other times as well. During the entire work phase, the digital work platform will be available and the organisers will be there to support you.

Prizes

DigiEduHack Dortmund aims to develop concrete solutions to challenges on the ground. That is why we deliberately refrain from awarding prizes for solutions.However, via a vote at the closing event, one solution will be selected to take part in the global DigiEduHack Award Contest.

1. Preliminary statement

 

1.1

Welcome to DigiEduHack. This set of rules is a body of principles governing DigiEduHack as a whole.
Each DigiEduHack challenge might have additional and/or specific rules. In case of doubt, please ask your challenge owner/host. 


1.2

DigiEduHack is a hackathon that encourages collaboration, co-creation, and real-life change. Even if in the end three teams will be crowned as global winners, any solution uploaded on digieduhack.com can potentially have an impact on digital education. This reflects the spirit of DigiEduHack: you take part in this hackathon because you and your team members want to take action and contribute to solving an actual challenge.


1.3

DigiEduHack is free, accessible, inclusive, and sustainable. Please keep in mind these values when entering and taking part in a DigiEduHack challenge. Participants are expected to behave according to these values.Do support other teams, respect the differences, encourage, help, and include others. Be fair. 
Do not shame, mock, attack, despise or hurt other participants. Be positive and remember to have fun: DigiEduHack is first and foremost a great experience where you are going to meet fantastic people, get new cool skills, grow your network.

2. Rules


2.1

Prior to joining Digieduhack, you, as a participant, should pick a challenge. Most of the challenges have open recruitment; some challenges have conditional recruitment (be a student part of the challenge owner's institution for example). You can see the status of a challenge by checking its label on the "Challenges" page.


2.2

As a participant, you can only join/take part in one DigiEduHack challenge. You can join alone, or take part as a team. If you take part as a team, each team member should sign up for the challenge individually. The size of the teams is decided by each challenge owner. This size may vary from one challenge to another. The composition of a team is decided by the local challenge owners. Please refer to the documentation specific to the challenge you wish to join. In case of doubt, please contact the challenge owner.


2.3

As a participant, you are expected to take part in all/most of the activities organized by the challenge owner on 9-10 November 2021. Challenge owners can decide to make some or all activities mandatory, either before, during, or after their DigiEduHack event. Please refer to the planning of the challenge you joined for further info.


2.4

Your solution should be co-created and finalized during the DigiEduHack event you're taking part in. It's allowed to join with draft ideas, frameworks, ideas, and concepts. It's not allowed to join DigiEduHack with a ready-made and/or ready-to-be-rolled-out solution or to use a ready-made and/or ready-to-be-rolled-out solution as a base for your co-creation process: you cannot re-work an already existing solution during DigiEduHack. You can get inspiration from an existing solution but plagiarism, copy, and/or any other form of treachery or deception are totally forbidden. In case of a breach of at least one rule in this paragraph, the challenge owner/host will ultimately decide on the applicable sanction (see infra 2.8). You can use open source resources if you clearly attribute the sampled part(s) to their original creator(s) and if the sampled part(s) is a minor component of your solution.


2.5

DigiEduHack is a multilevel hackathon where each challenge owner chooses one winning solution and might choose one or several runner-ups. Each challenge owner has their own judging grid to assess submitted solutions: please contact your challenge owner for more details. All the winning solutions (NOT the runner-ups) enter the global competition where the DigiEduHack steering group chooses 10 to 12 finalists based on the criteria available here. These 10 to 12 finalist solutions are uploaded on a platform to be submitted to a public vote. The three solutions that gather the most votes are declared global winners.


2.6

At the end of the event you are taking part in, follow and respect your challenge owner's instructions on when to stop working on your solution and on where, how, and when your solution will be assessed: pay especially attention to mandatory pitching/demo sessions and upload requirements. You had no time to finish? No worries: notify it during your pitch/demo/upload in the description of your project.  All the solutions created during DigiEduHack 2021 should be uploaded on digieduhack.com. Solutions uploaded to digieduhack.com are made public under the DigiEduHack intellectual property guidelines.


2.7

Only ONE team member should upload the team's solution on digieduhack.com, and only ONE solution per team should be uploaded. A team can only upload a solution for a challenge they are registered for and actually took part in. Before starting the upload process, please check the solution upload guidelines. To upload your solution digieduhack.com: login, go to "upload your solution" and follow the steps.


2.8

Participants or teams can be disqualified and excluded from DigiEdUhack for breaking one of the aforementioned rules/preliminary statements. If a single participant in a team breaks a rule, the participant will be excluded from their team and from DigiEduHack. The rest of the team can keep taking part in DigiEduHack. If a team as a whole breaks a rule, they will be excluded from DigiEduHack. Each challenge owner decides in full discretion on exclusions for their own event. The DigiEduHack central team decides in full discretion on exclusions for the global competition. Exclusions are definitive. Solutions that break the rules described in 2.4 will be disqualified. If a winning solution is disqualified, the challenge owner will organize a second deliberation and announce a new winner. If a finalist solution or a global winning solution is disqualified, the Steering group as a whole or in a smaller quorum will assess a new finalist solution, and a new public vote will take place.

A "hackathon" is an event in which groups work on concrete solutions to a topic ("to hack") in a predefined period of time ("marathon").

At the beginning, challenges that exist in the topic are presented or collected.
The groups are then usually formed randomly by deciding to work together out of interest in a particular sub-challenge of the topic. Often people with very different approaches work together.

A group decides for itself how to organise itself during the hackathon. However, the organisation team supports and helps at any time if necessary.

The result of the group's work is a prototype, i.e. an illustration of the solution that has been worked out. This result is presented at the end of the hackathon.

Detailed information on the schedule can be found in the timetable.

The process can be roughly summarised as follows:

  1. At the kick-off event, the participants receive impulses on the topic and teams are formed.
  2. In the working phase, the teams work independently on one aspect of the topic. In the work phase, the teams work independently on one aspect of the topic or a sub-challenge. If a team needs help, it will receive support.
  3. The teams can submit their work results by ... at ... o'clock. The teams choose the form themselves: Text file, presentation slides, digital prototype or something else creative (e.g. a short video).
  4. At the final event, the participants can inform themselves about all the results of their work. In addition, there will be an outlook on offers to continue the exchange.

 

Yes, due to the Corona situation, DigiEduHack Dortmund will be held digitally.

This means that the kick-off and closing events will take place as video conferences. A digital work platform is available to the teams for the work phase. Registration and submission of the teams' work results will take place via this site. Contact with the organisers is possible by e-mail, telephone and via the digital working platform.

If existing teams participate, they must decide for themselves in the light of the valid Corona regulations whether they (partly) also work in presence. If teachers participate in the DigiEduHack with their students, the cooperation of the students takes place according to the requirements of the respective school.

Every participant can take part in DigiEduHack Dortmund to the extent that is possible for him or her at the beginning of November.

Participation in the kick-off event is very important in order to find a team. Participation in DigiEduHack without attending the kick-off event is still possible in individual cases. However, please inform the organisers before the kick-off event! This is the only way to ensure that you can work in a team.

At the beginning of the work phase, it helps if the members of a team discuss who can work at what times. By dividing up the tasks accordingly and holding regular meetings of the whole team to clarify the status, it is no problem at all that not everyone can always work at the same time. If you lose touch with your own team, the organisers will also help.

Participants are free to take part in the closing event. However, this is the best place to get an overview of the results of all the groups.

The teams for the work phase of the DigiEduHack are formed during the kick-off event. It is therefore not necessary to know other participants beforehand or to form a team with them in advance. The organisers will help each participant to find a team according to their own interests. Therefore, participation in the kick-off event is very important.

Participation in DigiEduHack without attending the kick-off event is still possible in individual cases. However, please inform the organisers before the kick-off event! This is the only way to ensure that you can participate in a team.

It is also possible to participate as an existing team or with pupils. Information on this can be found under "How can I participate with pupils?" and "How can I participate with an existing team?"

The topic of DigiEduHack Dortmund 2021 is: How can we stimulate the learning processes of Dortmund's lower secondary school students using digital technologies in a networked local educational landscape - based on experiences from the Corona period?

A team decides for itself which aspect of this topic it will work on. There are six challenges as an orientation or suggestion. Have a look at the subpage with the challenges!

Separate information on the choice of topics for participation with students can be found under "How can I participate with students?"

Pupils cannot participate in DigiEduHack Dortmund independently, i.e. as individually registered participants. This is mainly because the work phase of the hackathon can overlap with school time.

Teachers have the option of participating in DigiEduHack Dortmund together with a group/class of students. To do this, the teacher registers as a participant for the event and indicates the participation of the pupils in the notes. Alternatively, the organisers can be informed by email to thasenberg@stadtdo.de.

The teacher acts as the students' interface to the DigiEduHack. The students can participate in the kick-off and closing events. Alternatively, they can organise their own kick-off event. Please contact the organisers in advance.

There are two special sub-challenges for students on the topic:

  1. hat creative digital solutions have we/has our school found in the Corona period - and how can we develop these further?
  2. what do we want to take away from the Corona time, how do we want to learn in the digital world after the Corona experience?

In addition, the pupils can of course also work on one of the six other sub-challenges or a completely different aspect of the topic. The teachers design the work phase for the pupils methodically at their own discretion. This also applies to the scope: participation is conceivable, for example, within the framework of individual lessons of the week, a project day or a "weekly homework assignment". The respective school platform can be used as a platform. The organisers will be happy to support you. Simply send an email to thasenberg@stadtdo.de.

The students' results can also be submitted at the end. As a rule, this is done in bundles via the teacher. 

DigiEduHack Dortmund thrives on the fact that teams are formed at the beginning of the event according to interests. At the same time, there is of course also the possibility to participate as an existing team.

An existing team means that the team members already know each other and would like to work together as exactly the same group at the DigiEduHack. This is a good idea, for example, if you want to work on a challenge that very specifically concerns your own school. 

When participating with an existing team, it is important that the participants indicate this in the comments or notes when registering. Ideally, they should all use the same team name (e.g. Team Gymnasium XY). Alternatively, one person from the existing team can send an email with the names of all group members to thasenberg@stadtdo.de.

As an existing team, you will participate normally in the kick-off and closing events. The work results are submitted in the same way as for all teams. 

You do not need any special skills in using digital tools to participate.

Registration is possible via this page. Alternatively, you can register by sending an email to thasenberg@stadtdo.de.

The opening and closing events will take place via a video conference tool. You will get an email with access data. If something doesn't work out, the organisers can be reached by email or phone.

During the work phase, a digital work platform is available to the teams. This platform is already in use at many schools in Dortmund. In addition, the organisers offer short virtual training sessions. In case of problems with the platform during the DigiEduHack, the organisers can be reached by email or phone.

The submission of work results is possible via this page or by mail to thasenberg@stadtdo.de.

Existing teams decide for their own work phase, if they use the digital work platform or their own tools. When participating with pupils, it is advisable to use the familiar school learning platform.

The event is a project within the framework of the "Masterplan Digitale Bildung Dortmund".

Digital education needs technical equipment, but it goes much further: It aims to enable the participation of all people, regardless of age, in the digital transformation and to support that learners are knowledgeable, critical and responsible in their use of digital technology.

In order to promote such an educational offensive in a networked manner, the City of Dortmund has developed the "Masterplan Digitale Bildung" together with numerous experts and partners. It was adopted by the city council in December 2020 and is now in the implementation phase. The master plan serves as the basis for a process that is continuously progressing and involves all educational institutions active in Dortmund. Measures along the entire education chain are taken into account, from nursery schools and family education to (vocational) schools, youth development, adult and further education.
